At Sound Renovation, doing the job right matters even when the homeowner may never see the difference. From fixing hidden problems to choosing better materials and admitting mistakes, we’d rather spend a little more time or money today than knowingly leave something behind that could become your problem later.
You’d Never Know We Took The Shortcut. But We Would.
And That’s More Than Enough Reason To Do It Right.
There’s a funny thing about roofing and siding.
Some of the most important parts of the job disappear when we’re finished.
The underlayment gets covered. Flashing gets tucked away. Fasteners disappear. Damaged wood gets replaced and buried beneath new materials. Once everything is buttoned up, you’re mostly looking at the pretty part.
Which means there are plenty of opportunities for a contractor to say, “Eh, good enough.”
At Sound Renovation, that phrase makes us a little itchy.
If we find something that needs to be corrected, we correct it. If we aren’t sure how something should be handled, we find out. And if doing it properly costs us a little more than we planned? Well, that’s our problem. It shouldn’t become yours five years from now.
We Could Cover It Up. But Then We’d Know It’s There.
We’ve opened up projects and discovered existing conditions that weren’t visible when we originally put together the scope of work.
Siding or roofing has a habit of doing that. Houses don’t always reveal all their secrets during an estimate.
Sometimes what we find could technically be covered back up. There’s a decent chance the homeowner would never know the difference, and moving forward would certainly be easier for us.
Instead, we stop, show the homeowner what we found, and figure out how to correct it properly before covering everything back up.
That may mean we get materials we hadn’t accounted for and take the financial hit for that on our end. It may mean we spend more time on the project than we originally thought.
We can live with spending a little more than expected. Knowingly burying a problem? Not so much.
The Boring Stuff Is Kind Of A Big Deal
Nobody invites the neighbors over to admire their new underlayment. We understand.
But underlayments, flashing materials, fasteners, ventilation products, and all the other less-than-glamorous components of a roofing or siding system matter quite a bit once the project has to start doing its actual job.
That’s why we’re particular about what we use. We recommend GAF Timberline HDZ, James Hardie, and Maybeck – trusted brands that are known to hold up here. And we use all the components with these brands that are recommended to work with them.
While there times when a less expensive component would technically get the job done. We choose the better option anyway, even when the additional cost comes out of our side of the project.
Because saving $50 or $100 on something that’s about to be covered by thousands of dollars worth of roofing or siding just doesn’t make much sense to us.
If that inexpensive component fails later, getting back to it isn’t necessarily a $50 problem anymore. Suddenly, that little savings isn’t looking quite so clever.
Caulk Is Great. Magic – It Is Not.
Some shortcuts are tempting precisely because the finished project can still look perfectly fine.
Questionable flashing can be reused. Damaged wood can disappear underneath new material. Ventilation can be inadequate without announcing itself on installation day.
And then there’s caulk.
We like caulk. It has a job, but being asked to compensate for improper flashing isn’t it.
Those details may not make much difference in the final beauty shot of your project, but we’re building for what happens after the picture is taken. We want that roof or siding system performing 10 or 20 years from now.
That requires paying attention to the parts nobody is going to compliment us on, and we’re perfectly okay with that.
When We Don’t Know, We Don’t Guess
There are times that roofing or siding projects can get weird.
You open something up and find an unusual condition. A particular product is being used in a situation you haven’t encountered before. Something raises a question that deserves a better answer than, “This should probably work.”
That’s when we pick up the phone.
At Sound Renovation, we work with manufacturers every day. If we have a question about a product or installation method, we’ll contact the manufacturer or bring one of their representatives into the conversation.
Yes, that can take additional time. We’d still rather spend that time getting the correct answer directly from the people who make the product than take our best guess, cover everything up, and discover later that our best guess wasn’t particularly good.
There’s no prize for being the fastest person to answer a question you aren’t sure about.
We Can’t Stomach Doing Less Than 110%
You may never see every detail that went into your finished roof or siding project.
That’s kind of the point.
At Sound Renovation, we want to finish the project knowing the things underneath look just as good to us as the things you can see. Whether anybody else ever sees them or not, we know they’re there.
If that’s the kind of standard you want behind your roofing or siding project, talk to Sound Renovation about your home. We offer Norwalk, CT roofing and siding products, installed meticulously – you won’t be sorry! Get a free estimate today.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Work Ethic
We believe in doing things right, the first time around. And if issues arise, we address them rather than dressing them up and hiding them. Here are some common questions homeowners ask about us and our work ethic.
What does Sound Renovation do if there’s a question about an installation?
A: We don’t guess. When we encounter an unusual condition or have a product-specific question, we’ll contact the manufacturer or involve its representative so we can get the correct information before moving forward.
What happens if Sound Renovation finds hidden damage during my project?
A: We’ll stop and show you what we found rather than simply covering it back up. We’ll explain the condition and determine the proper way to correct it before moving forward with the project.
Why does Sound Renovation sometimes use more expensive materials?
A: We look at how the entire roofing or siding system will perform over time, not just what technically gets the job done today. Spending a little more on the right underlayment, flashing, fastener, or ventilation product can help avoid a much more expensive problem later.
