Roof replacement in Fairfield County, CT requires extra attention during the winter months, when snow can hide nails and other roofing debris. Sound Renovation performs multiple cleanups throughout the project. We also return in the spring for an additional cleanup after the snow melts. It’s another way we go beyond the standard process to protect your property and ensure nothing is left behind.
Snow Hides Nails, So We Come Back When It’s Gone
Every Winter Roof Goes On Our Spring List For An Extra A-To-Z Cleanup
Winter is the slow season for roof replacements in Fairfield County, CT. But, for various reasons, you may need roofing help long after local temperatures start to plummet.
There’s just one problem. Major roofing projects generate a lot of debris, including tire-puncturing nails. It’s relatively easy to find this debris when the weather’s good. However, it can disappear out of sight when snow lies thick on the ground.
That’s why Sound Renovation takes an extra step on wintertime projects.
On every job, we clean up daily as we go. We also clean the site again when our work is done.
But in the wintertime, our work still isn’t done. When the snow melts in early spring, we’ll return for another round of site clean-up. That’s the only way to ensure we get all the debris, not just some of it. It’s also the only way we can uphold our commitment to doing the right thing, every time.
What Actually Comes Off Your Roof During A Tear-Off
During a properly performed roof replacement, all the existing materials are removed from your roof. This tear-off doesn’t stop until the bare decking underneath is revealed.
As you might guess, all that work generates a lot of debris. Typically, that includes thousands upon thousands of roofing nails. Other common forms of debris include:
- Felt paper and other forms of underlayment
- The old asphalt shingles themselves
- Strips of old roof flashing
- Any rotten roof decking
All of this material must be tracked down and removed from your property. The bigger pieces are easy to find. However, it can take real effort to track down all the nails and smaller bits of debris.
How We Clean As We Go
At Sound Renovation, we plan ahead to keep your property as clean as possible during your replacement project. In all seasons, we lay down tarps to catch the debris during roof tear-offs. This material is then stored in an on-site dumpster for later removal.
We also clean as we go throughout our owner-led projects. To catch nails, we do magnet sweeps back and forth across your property. We’re also constantly on the lookout for stray pieces of material.
The third phase of cleanup takes place when the last nail has been driven into your new roof. It’s then that we walk your property one last time to look for anything we might have missed. Only when this step is done are we satisfied we’ve left everything as it should be.
We Check The Neighbors’ Yards, Too
If you have neighbors, there’s always a chance some of your old roofing may fall in their yard. We don’t want that, and neither do you.
That’s why, with their permission, we’ll check for debris on their property as well. Sometimes we don’t find anything. But quite often, we do. Either way, we feel it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Why Snow Beats Even A Careful Cleanup
Unfortunately, winter can throw a wrench in our well-made cleanup plans. Snow on the ground is the perfect hiding place for nails and other small bits of material. Frozen ground can also cause problems when it holds tight to old roofing debris.
In these conditions, there’s just no way to ensure we’ve done the job to our standards, or yours. Matter of fact, there’s a pretty good chance we’ve left something behind in all the snow and ice.
That’s unacceptable. How do we address the problem? By planning a return to your property as soon as warmer weather comes back to Fairfield County. Realistically, this can mean a delay of a month or more as winter transitions into spring.
The Spring Sweep: Standard On Every Winter Job
When we return in the spring, we’ll complete all the steps we normally take in a roof replacement cleanup. That includes going over your yard, as well as your neighbors’.
We may only find small amounts of overlooked debris. We may also find a lot of it. But for us, even one nail is too many. That’s why our spring revisit is standard on all projects performed in the winter months.
There are zero exceptions to this rule. And when the snow clears, you don’t have to reach out to us for help. You’re already on our list.
