We’re Not Afraid Of A Little Side-By-Side Competition
At Sound Renovation, good communication means making sure homeowners understand what they’re buying – not simply keeping them updated. We’ll even compare our proposal to another contractor’s line by line, explain the differences, and let you decide what’s worth your money.
You got three estimates for your roof. One is $5,000 less than the others.
Well, that seems easy.
Except there’s one fairly important question: Are all three contractors actually quoting you the same job?
At Sound Renovation, we don’t expect homeowners to know the difference between underlayments, flashing details, ventilation systems, installation methods, and every other component tucked inside a roofing or siding proposal. Most people have better things to do with their time than become roofing experts just to hire one.
Explaining that stuff is our job.
And if you want to put our proposal next to somebody else’s and go through them line by line? Bring it.
We’re comfortable explaining why something is in our proposal, what it does, and why we think it’s worth paying for. If another contractor approaches something differently, we can talk about that, too.
You’re spending the money. You should understand where it’s going.
A Lower Number Doesn’t Always Mean A Better Deal
When homeowners collect multiple estimates, it’s natural to look at the number at the bottom first. Price matters, and we’re certainly not going to pretend otherwise.
But two proposals with “roof replacement” written across the top can describe two pretty different projects underneath.
That’s why, when a homeowner brings us another contractor’s proposal, we’re willing to put it right next to ours and dig into the scope. We want to know whether we’re actually comparing the same roof before we start comparing the price.
Is one contractor replacing flashing while another plans to reuse it? What type of underlayment is specified? How is ventilation being handled? Are there differences in trim work, installation methods, or other components that account for some of that gap?
And we’re not doing that just to find something wrong with the cheaper proposal. If another contractor included something we didn’t, ask us why. We should be able to explain that difference just as clearly as we explain something that appears in our proposal but not theirs.
That’s what good communication means at Sound Renovation. It goes beyond returning phone calls and letting you know when the crew will arrive. We want you to understand what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what you’re paying for before you decide who gets the job.
“Because we said so” wasn’t a great answer when you were a kid, and it isn’t much better when you’re spending thousands of dollars on your house.
Sometimes The Difference Is Hiding In The Details
We recently ran into exactly this situation on a cedar roofing project.
Our proposal came in higher than another contractor’s. No way around it. If you looked only at the two numbers at the bottom of the page, we were the expensive guys.
But once we started comparing what was actually included, that higher number wasn’t quite so mysterious.
Our proposal specified a premium vapor-permeable underlayment, a more substantial ventilation system, new flashings in key areas, and hand-nailed shingles. Those weren’t random upgrades we tossed onto the proposal to make the number bigger. There were specific differences in how we planned to build that roof.
Once we walked through them, the homeowner could see where the additional cost came from and, more importantly, decide which upgrades mattered to them.
That’s the point of the conversation.
We’re not interested in telling homeowners that spending more automatically means they’re getting more. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn’t. We’d rather show you what’s different and let you decide whether those differences are worth your money.
Same Brand. Same Product. Same Job? Nope.
Here’s another place where comparing proposals can get tricky.
Two contractors may list the exact same roofing brand or product. That doesn’t mean you’re getting the exact same finished roof.
At Sound Renovation, we don’t look at a roof as one product. The shingle or cedar you see when the job is finished is only one part of the system we’re building. What goes underneath it, how the roof is ventilated, how flashing is handled, and how the material is installed all matter.
That’s why seeing the same manufacturer on two proposals doesn’t tell us much by itself. We want to know what each contractor pairs with that product and how they plan to install it. Those details can affect performance, longevity, and even the warranty you think you’re getting.
We take the same approach with warranties. A giant number printed next to “years” certainly looks impressive. But we’d rather explain what that warranty actually covers, what the manufacturer requires, and whether the proposed roofing system qualifies for that level of coverage.
So if you put two proposals in front of us with the exact same product listed, we’ll keep reading.
The logo on the roofing materials might be identical. The roof you end up with may not be.
Yes, We’ll Do This Even If You Hire Someone Else
This is usually the part that surprises people.
You can bring us another contractor’s proposal, and we’ll actually go through it with you. We’ll look at what they included, compare it to our scope, and point out the differences that could easily get lost when you’re staring at two pages full of roofing or siding terminology.
If their proposal handles something differently, we’ll explain how. If ours includes something theirs doesn’t, we’ll tell you why we specified it. And if the other contractor included something we didn’t, that’s fair game for the conversation, too.
We’re not looking for an excuse to declare every line of our proposal superior. We’re trying to give you enough information to understand what each contractor is actually offering.
And after all of that, you can hire the other contractor.
We’ll survive.
Of course we want your business. We’re a remodeling company, not a free roofing terminology hotline. But these are major investments in people’s homes, and we don’t think good information should come with a requirement that you sign our contract afterward.
If our proposal is the right fit once you understand everything that’s included, great. We’d love to work with you.
If it isn’t, you can decide knowing what you’re actually choosing, rather than picking a number at the bottom of a page and hoping everything above it means roughly the same thing.
That matters to us.
So go ahead. Show us the other guy’s quote. We’ll pull up ours and see what you’re really comparing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roofing
Does using the same roofing brand mean contractors are offering the same roof?
A: No. The roofing product is only one part of the finished system. Installation methods, supporting components, contractor qualifications, and manufacturer requirements can affect both the finished roof and available warranty coverage

Why can roofing estimates for the same home be so different?
A: Contractors may specify different materials, underlayments, ventilation products, flashing work, trim details, installation methods, and items to be replaced or reused. That means two estimates for the same house may not actually be estimates for the same finished project.
Will Sound Renovation review another contractor’s proposal with me?
A: Yes. We’re happy to compare another contractor’s proposal with ours and explain differences in materials, scope of work, installation methods, ventilation, flashing, warranties, and other details. You don’t have to become a roofing expert. You just need enough information to make a confident decision about your home.
